Meet the Studson SHK-2: The Next-Generation Type II Safety Helmet
Studson's SHK-2 safety helmet arrives in Q4 2026. It's built entirely around Koroyd, comes in full brim and standard brim styles, and is offered vented (Class C) or non-vented (Class E) in 17 colors. What's New in the SHK-2
Most safety helmets use an EPS foam liner. The SHK-2 replaces it with Koroyd, an energy-absorbing matrix of welded tubes that crumples uniformly on impact to absorb energy and reduce the force that reaches the head. Studson says the SHK-2 is tested for both top and lateral impact. Other features from Studson's spec sheets:
- Cooler by design: with no heat-trapping EPS foam, air moves through the helmet. There are no bolt-on fans or battery packs.
- Precision fit: a flexible head cradle and rear dial, with retention arms that adjust vertically to sit below the occipital bone so the helmet stays stable through hard movement.
- Glove-friendly controls: a large, tactile dial that turns with thick gloves on, plus a magnetic Fidlock buckle that releases fast.
- Visible impact check: Koroyd crumples visibly under a severe impact, so a daily inspection shows whether the liner has taken a hit and the helmet needs replacing.
- Ready for accessories: integrated lamp clips retain a headlamp, and integrated grip panels make the helmet easy to handle.

Type II, Class C and Class E: What the Ratings Mean
Industrial head protection in the U.S. is rated under the ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 standard by type (impact direction) and class (electrical protection):
- Type I helmets are designed to reduce the force of impact to the top of the head.
- Type II helmets are designed to reduce the force of impact to the top and sides of the head, which matters on jobs where workers can be struck from the side or fall into an object.
- Class C (conductive) helmets provide no electrical protection. The vented SHK-2 is Class C.
- Class E (electrical) helmets are tested to 20,000 volts and are intended to reduce the danger of exposure to high-voltage conductors. The non-vented SHK-2 is Class E.
Studson states the SHK-2 is designed, engineered and built to comply with the ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2026 Type II+ standard, which has not yet been released. We'll update this article once the standard is published. In the meantime, choose a helmet class based on your site's hazard assessment. If workers could contact energized conductors, a vented Class C helmet is the wrong choice.
Full Brim or Standard Brim?
- Full brim: a 360-degree brim that shields the eyes and neck from overhead sun and runoff. Studson positions it for utilities and oil and gas crews working long hours in the open.
- Standard brim: a short front brim that opens up sightlines when looking overhead or climbing, plus an integrated rear peak that keeps rain and sun off the neck.
