Hard Hat Types and Classes
Hard hats are tested to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1, which rates every helmet by impact type and electrical class:
Type I – reduces the force of a blow to the top of the head.
Type II – reduces the force of a blow to the top or sides of the head.
Class G (General) – proof-tested at 2,200 volts.
Class E (Electrical) – proof-tested at 20,000 volts.
Class C (Conductive) – no electrical protection.
Proof-test voltages are lab test levels, not the voltage a helmet protects you at. The label inside the shell shows the type and class. For help choosing, read our guide to Type 2 hard hats or shop hard hats and safety helmets.
Bump caps are for low-clearance bumps and scrapes only. They are not hard hats and don't replace one where there are falling-object hazards.
